On the Bias and Mean-square Error of the Sample Minimum and the Maximum Likelihood Estimator for Two Ordered Normal Means

چکیده
This note considers the estimation of ordered means of two independent normal random variables. When estimating the smaller one of the two means, two simple (non-trivial) estimators are available: the minimum of the two normal random variables and the maximum likelihood estimator. For these two estimators we provide simple elementary derivations of bias and mean square error.

Estimating a Bounded Normal Mean Relative to Squared Error Loss Function
Let be a random sample from a normal distribution with unknown mean and known variance The usual estimator of the mean, i.e., sample mean is the maximum likelihood estimator which under squared error loss function is minimax and admissible estimator. In many practical situations, is known in advance to lie in an interval, say for some In this case, the maximum likelihood estimator...
متن کاملEstimation of Parameters for an Extended Generalized Half Logistic Distribution Based on Complete and Censored Data
This paper considers an Extended Generalized Half Logistic distribution. We derive some properties of this distribution and then we discuss estimation of the distribution parameters by the methods of moments, maximum likelihood and the new method of minimum spacing distance estimator based on complete data. Also, maximum likelihood equations for estimating the parameters based on Type-I and Typ...
متن کاملEstimation of the Parameters of the Lomax Distribution using the EM Algorithm and Lindley Approximation
Estimation of statistical distribution parameter is one of the important subject of statistical inference. Due to the applications of Lomax distribution in business, economy, statistical science, queue theory, internet traffic modeling and so on, in this paper, the parameters of Lomax distribution under type II censored samples using maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods are estimated. Wherea...
متن کاملComparison of Small Area Estimation Methods for Estimating Unemployment Rate
Extended Abstract. In recent years, needs for small area estimations have been greatly increased for large surveys particularly household surveys in Sta tistical Centre of Iran (SCI), because of the costs and respondent burden. The lack of suitable auxiliary variables between two decennial housing and popula tion census is a challenge for SCI in using these methods. In general, the...
متن کاملThe Ratio-type Estimators of Variance with Minimum Average Square Error
The ratio-type estimators have been introduced for estimating the mean and total population, but in recent years based on the ratio methods several estimators for population variance have been proposed. In this paper two families of estimators have been suggested and their approximation mean square error (MSE) have been developed. In addition, the efficiency of these variance estimators are com...
